Federico Pepe releases Ableton Push Hack as open source: SSH access to Push 3 Standalone, full bidirectional MIDI button-by-button, customizable superposable interface. A live setup without a computer becomes seriously feasible.

Why it's important

Ableton's Push 3 Standalone is a full Linux computer disguised as a controller. Since its launch, a few curious hackers knew this—but no one had offered clean, documented, usable access. Federico Pepe has just changed that with Ableton Push Hack, an open-source project that turns the Push 3 into a fully programmable machine via SSH.

How it works

SSH access to the Push 3 Standalone isn’t a security exploit: Ableton left the door open, and Pepe’s project walks through it cleanly, building a usable infrastructure. The project exposes three layers of intervention:

1. Push Manager – file management (upload, download, project organization) from any browser, without Ableton Live on the host computer.

2. Full bidirectional MIDI – every button, encoder, and pad on the Push 3 becomes controllable from the outside, with LED feedback. Two modes:

  • Intercept – cuts Ableton’s internal routing → the Push becomes a pure MIDI controller
  • Forward – sends data directly to the hardware MIDI output

3. Shadow UI – an overlay interface on the Push 3’s screen, allowing images, videos, or a custom management interface to be displayed.

Why this changes things for DnB producers

The use cases are immediate. A Push 3 Standalone with full bidirectional MIDI can become a performance controller entirely mapped to a custom rack—external sidechain, sample triggering, filter control via encoders with visual feedback on the built-in screen. No laptop on stage.

For live DnB acts where improvisation relies on precise triggering (breaks, drops, redrums), having a Push 3 responding to an external sequencer via clean bidirectional MIDI is a serious entry point into a hardware live setup without compromise.

Access and documentation

The project is fully open source, available on GitHub with a detailed user manual. It runs on Push 3 Standalone only (not compatible with Push 3 connected to Ableton in controller mode).

Note: Federico Pepe is a certified Ableton trainer and brand manager. This hack is neither official nor supported by Ableton—but it doesn’t violate the terms of use. The distinction is important before flashing anything.
