Opius returns to Pinecone Moonshine with four dnb selections for his second solo EP on the label. When Opius contributes to Pinecone Moonshine, it leans heavily into drumfunk. And as this EP reveals, Opius captures different timbres and intensities with his drum kits and break selection, creating:
Drum_unication.
Opening with slow-moving, descending drones layered with vintage sci-fi synths, "Acoustic Zoo" builds anticipation like an explosion in reverse. The drumming is reserved at first, but after the drop - frequent drum edits, shuffled fragments, and broken beats.
"Dreamt Reality" starts as a softer track - fittingly dreamlike. Shimmering pads balance a frantic tempo and a break full of drum rolls. Reminiscinct of atmospheric dnb from the 90s, there is trumpet in the second breakdown. This just before the tone turns aggressive like unreleased emotion. The track resolves back into the gentle pads.
"Isolated Space" switches between Amen and other breaks. We don't do Amen breaks often on the label. What makes this one unique is how natural the virtual drummers are handing off turns drumming. And this track is full of Opius' signature drum edits.
Wrapping up Drum_unication is a track inspired by the drum battles of the 60s and 70s in which legendary drummers take turns. Opening with audience sounds sets the stage and intention. Opius thoughtfully sequences detailed drum patterns making it feel like two drummers are watching and listening to each other.
