An active campaign urges Bristol City Council to scrap a policy restricting “people gatherings” in certain areas—a measure that directly impacts the city’s clubs, bars, and pubs, the birthplace of British drum & bass.

The Bristol context

Bristol is not like any other city for drum & bass. This is where the sound took its British form – Roni Size, Krust, Die, DJ Suv, Reprazent. This is where the connection between the Jamaican sound systems of St Pauls, the 90s rave culture, and the warehouses of Stokes Croft forged a genre. When it comes to Bristol’s nightlife scene, it’s not just about bars: it’s the infrastructure that keeps this legacy alive.

The restriction

Save Bristol Nightlife, a local nightlife advocacy group, has launched a campaign with the city council to repeal a policy that restricts “congregations of people” in certain areas of the city. A vague wording that, in practice, targets Bristol’s clubs, bars, and pubs.

The stakes for the scene

In Bristol, the tension between municipal policies and nightlife culture is unique: the city has a strong musical identity, a drum & bass and jungle scene that continues to produce and gather, and cultural institutions that have survived decades of development pressure.

Removing these restrictions means protecting the physical space where this culture exists. Without clubs, there’s no dancefloor. Without a dancefloor, the heritage becomes a museum.

To be continued

Save Bristol Nightlife is continuing its campaign with the council. The effort is documented by Mixmag.
